Our experienced and caring staff is on-site 24 hours. We are able to advise on any health or management issues. All stabled horses are checked on our late night rounds, as a matter of course, all through the year.

We have around 35 acres of turnout in summer and 15-20 acres in winter. Our fields are rotated and maintained well. Stabled horses are turned out whenever possible.

Exercise options

Our local hacking comprises very quiet country lanes, linked by off-road stretches. We are 6 miles from both Pendine and Ginst Point, at either end of Pendine Sands. We have a 40m x 20m outdoor school with a sand/rubber surface, and a lunge pen approx. 15m x 15m, both of which livery owners are welcome to use. Our 5-berth, electric-powered horse-walker is also a useful exercise supplement or alternative for stabled horses.

Livery owners are welcome to participate in lessons, both in flatwork and jumping, or to book their own lessons privately through our experienced and sympathetic instructors. We have a set of coloured show jumps with fillers, and regularly hold jumping clinics. We have started to hold jumping competitions over the summer which livery owners are encouraged to join.

We have a lorry and a trailer available. Transport to shows, fun rides etc. can be arranged. Please contact us directly for rates. email: enquiries@hillsfarmstables

Our approach is sympathetic but firm, using motivation rather than force to produce a young horse that is willing to do what is asked, whether schooling for dressage and jumping, or hacking around the lanes.

Melissa is BHS-qualified and conventional methods are used, i.e. lungeing and long-reining as groundwork prior to backing and riding on. Alternative methods such as round pen work may be used if necessary, depending on the individual.

Owners of youngsters are encouraged to watch or participate at all stages of their horse's training. We pay particular attention to making sure that the horse and its owner are happy with each other at the ridden stage before the horse goes back home.

We are situated on a quiet lane 600m from the main road into Laugharne, and youngsters can be gradually and safely introduced to town traffic, farm traffic, open country and water.

We have a high proven success rate, and regularly see many of the horses we have broken in competing at shows and events. All of the horses currently competing from Hills Farm Stables were produced from unbroken youngsters, and one is homebred.

Although I still have a huge amount to learn, I am, thanks to Jackie and Melissa, beginning to feel more confident in the ways of horses. Both are always willing to offer help and advice on riding and give constant encouragement as well as arranging for instructors to teach. They are happy for me to do as much or as little as I am able, which allows for more flexible livery when I am working away from home. I have enjoyed being involved with the day to day running of the stables, even mucking out, haynet filling and poo picking the fields. It is a very positive experience at Hill’s Farm Stables and I am confident that both my horses are in safe hands.   -  Sue with Joules and Nessie.

From first hand experience I can highly recommend Mel and Jackie Watson if you are looking for someone to back or train your horse. Mel has a calm, relaxed and professional manner. She treats the horses as individuals and is flexible when training, spending as much time as required as she understands how horses learn. I have had all the support I need to go it alone. They did a superb job with my 3 year old warmblood and at very competitive rates. -  Thanks, Sue with Izzy

Polly and Phoenix have been really well looked after during the five years they have been with Jackie and Mel. It’s a real treat to have been able to watch Phoenix progress from being backed to winning competitions. Debbie and Sian

What a lovely, relaxed knowledgeable atmosphere. The horses thrive on the calm surroundings. Tyson, Bryn and Rambo are very happy at Hill’s Farm Stables and my daughters get expert tuition. -  Sharon
